Lt. Col. Bert M. Atkinson Dies, 1937

     Liutenant Colonel Bert M. Atkinson, son of Georgia Governor and Mrs. W. Y. Atkinson, died after a long period of illness at the Fitzsimmons General Hospital, Denver, April 27, 1937, and was buried on April 30 at his old home, Newnan, Georgia. Captain Atkinson won his JMA June 5, 1916, and saw air service on the Mexican border. He was overseas in 1918 and organized the First Pursuit Group, whose members included Rickenbacker, Harold Hartney, Meissner and Frank Luke. In his command of the First Pursuit Wing were personnel of the Lafayette. Lieutenant Quentin Roosevelt was in the latter. Colonel Atkinson retired from the Army in 1922 after a distinguished career.
