THE VERY EARLIEST EARLY BIRDS
by Ernest Jones
October 31, 1908---Baron de Caters made his first flight of 800m in a Voisin triplane with Vivinus engine of 57 h.p.
from The Very Earliest Early Birds
Editor's Note: According to an email message from his grandson, Guy de Caters, (1-21-02)
"From my family records, the 25th seems to be correct for a flight of 800 meters at Issy-lez-Moulineaux on a triplan aeroplane." I thank him for this correction and his other remarks.

CATERSDREEF
via email from Wim Op de beeck, 5-31-05
Dear Mister Cooper,
I was reading your site, and saw your question for information about Baron de Caters
In Belgium, in a town called Schilde, near Antwerp, there is a street called after the Baron. The street is called Catersdreef. I thought you might want to know.

ONLINE RESOURCES
You will find some 69 links to sites which reference the career of Baron Pierre de Caters, using the Google search engine. (8-24-03)
Some are very brief, others a bit more detailed, many with photographs, both of aereoplanes and automobiles.

THE PIONEERS
This website offers a resumé of the history of aviation in Belgium from 1794 to 1996. Included in the story is the following paragraph which mentions Pierre de Caters.

"In 1910, the Aero-Club of Belgium organised a flying week in Brussels at the Stokkel Hippodrome. Eleven Belgian pilots were listed on the program :Pierre de Caters, Jan Olieslagers, Charles Van den Born, Joseph Christiaens, Jules Tyck, Jules de Laminne, Nicolas Kinet, Alphonse de Ridder, Leon Verstraeten, Joseph d'Hespel. and Alfred Lanser.
Olieslagers established a new world record flying at a height of 1,524 metres."

THE GOLDEN BOOK
This appears to be an entry point to a fabulous collection of photographs. The text is all in French which prevents me from understanding it very well. However, it seems to be a collection of pages from an album filled with pictures of early Belgian aviators and aeroplanes. You will be able to enlarge the picture of the de Caters' page. I suggest that you surf about the site, just to enjoy some of the other entries. You can access the site by clicking on the title.
