FIRST VIETNAMESE PILOT
by Email from Canh Tran-Minh, 9-29-08
Dear Ralph,
In reference to your Web site http://www.earlyaviators.com/edohuuvi.htm, and the question about the first vietnamese pilot, I can give you my opinion on Do Huu Vi because I have been working on the genealogy chart of our family.
Do Huu Vi (aka Do Huu Ty) is my grand mother's cousin. Do Huu Vi's parents are Do Huu Phuong (1841-1914) and Tran Thi Dieu (1842-1930).
They have 11 children. The youngest children were named according to the stem-branch or sexagenary cycle of the lunar year: Dan, Meo, Thin, Ty, Ngo... To me, Do Huu Vi was born on 1881 (and not 1883), which corresponds to the year Tân Ty (year of the snake). His sister Do Thi Ngo was born on 1882 (Nham Ngo: the year of the horse). Therefore, the other name of Do Huu Vi is Do Huu Ty. Both names corresponds to a same person, but the name "Tay" should be written as "Ty" to be exact.
He is born in Cholon where his father Do Huu Phuong was the governor (Tong Doc) of this city: Tong Doc Phuong. Many of his brothers had got the French nationality and their degrees from the French universities.
I hope this will of help to you and do not hesitate to contact me at tranjc@free.fr
With best regards
Canh Tran-Minh
