EDWARD EVANS

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTES
Via email from Nick Venechuk, 8-15-05
Greetings to Ralph Cooper,
I believe I have two photo's of Edward Evans in his first Bleriot monoplane. They were taken by my Grandfather, Henry Kramer of Ashton, Iowa, probably during the summer of 1916, although it may be 1917. I believe they were taken just outside of Ashton in Osceola county, which is next to Lyon county.
The first shows the aircraft from a distance, but the pilot can be seen standing near the craft. The second is much closer, and shows the single wing, struts, crafted propeller, and pilot standing in the cockpit, but his head is down and his face cannot be seen.
If you are interested, I could e-mail them to you. However, they are owned by out family and permission would have to be obtained before any public use or publication via print or internet occurs.
Thank you,
Nick Venechuk
Rockford, Michigan

EVANS AND HIS BLERIOT, 1917
from an unidentified newclipping
"Edward Evans, who had bought a Bleroit monoplane a year before and had taken it to Grinnell to learn to fly it, decided that he needed another plane. The motor in the monoplane was so small it caused a lot of trouble, so he got rid of it, and bought one with a larger engine. It was brought to Rock Rapids-and was awaiting favorable weather before being flown, when the war started.."

EVANS GLIDING CLUB, 1928
This page on the Charles Lindbergh website, in an article entitled "LINDY HOPS GLIDERS" by Raul Blacksten, may refer to the aviator in question, although the identification is not certain. The following paragraph may be found on the page.
"In 1928, Edward Evans founded the Evans Glider Club in Detroit and oversaw its conversion into the National Glider Association (NGA) in 1929. Although the NGA only lasted until 1931, out of its ashes arose the Soaring Society of America, now 70 years old. "
