FIRST FLIGHT FROM SELFRIDGE, 1917      Capt. Byron Q. Jones, Selfridge's first Base Commander, made the first flight from Selfridge in a Curtiss JN4-D biplane on July 8, 1917, seven days after the field was activated as a military installation. On July 16, 1917, three months after World War I had started, actual pilot training began at Selfridge. From History of Selfridge Air National Guard
