BIOGRAPHICAL NOTES
via email from Catherine Evans, 10-21-09
Hello Mr. Cooper

Hope you are well. I notice you have no year of birth for Louis Noel. He was born in 1872, in Paris - one of the more senior aviators at Hendon, being as a lot were barely more than boys. He served in the First World War in the French military and was married, dividing his time constantly between his family in Paris and his aviation work in Hendon prior to the war. He was the last pilot to fly Miss Eleanor Trehawke-Davies home across the Channel, two months after the death of Gustav Hamel (she was in Paris at the time he was killed). Louis Noel left England for good during the first week of August 1914, within days of war being declared.
I do not know when he died, but he was certainly still alive and well by the end of the 1920s (then in his fifties) and running a motor car business, I believe, in Romania.

I may have an original photograph of him somewhere. Will email it over if I find it.

Best wishes
Catherine

Racing Aviator's Mishap Causes Landing Near Rye
This page on the Rye Website recounts a most interesting episode in Louis Noel's career. The story is illistrated with two photographs and mentions his being assisted by a local man, Mr. W. J. Burnham. Also mentioned is the fact that Noel is the chief aviator of Claude Grahame-White. You can go directly to the page by clicking on the title above..
If time permits, I suggest that you take advantage of the opportunity to learn more about the city of Rye itself.

Louis Noel & Nine Passengers
This page of the Royal Aeronautical Society presents recent additions to its photographic collection. Included is a beautiful photograph of Louis Noel piloting a Grahame-White Type 10 Charabanc and carrying a record of nine passengers. There is an explanation of the photo and it carries an inscription written by Noel. You can go directly to the page by clicking on the title above..
