BIOGRAPHICAL NOTES
via email from G. N. Jayaprakash,
great-grandson of S.V. Setty, 10-11-05

He is currently employed as a Mechanical engineer working for government of India
to carry out research work on Gas turbines for military applications.
Dear Sir
Are you aware of S. V. Setty, who worked in AVRO from 1911-1912 and got a medal from A.V. Roe for designing the Duigan aeroplane?
I was in touch with Roger Jackson who said he had never heard him because AVRO record was lost in a fire in 1950.
I am interested in selling the medal and am looking forward for your reply

Editor's Note: I was not aware of this outstanding Indian pioneer and am very grateful to his great-grandson for alerting me to his story.

AVRO-500
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN
Mr. S. V. SETTY has been a member of our staff
since the 5th. May 1911 and is still with us. During the
whole of this period he has given every satisfaction, has
been an excellent time-keeper, and in every way
persevering and industrious, and is now very expert in
all matters relating to aviation.
He has had considerable experience in the Flying
School and has become very efficient in the tuning up of
aeroplanes and engines. He has the makings of a very good
Pilot.
He has also worked in the Drawing Office on some
new types of machines, and we now consider him to have had
sufficient experience to be left in entire charge of the
erection of a machine of any type. If required he could carry
out any alterations, which may be required, including the
designing and drawing of same.
We have the utmost confidence in recommending
Mr. Setty for any position of trust for which he might apply.

Experience Certificate Issued by AVRO
12th. March 1912
Collection of G. N. Jayaprakash, 10-20-05

NOTES ON THE CERTIFICATE
via email from G. N. Jayaprakash,
great-grandson of S.V. Setty, 10-22-05
The manager who signed the certificate is none other than H.V. Roe, brother of A.V. Roe. S.V.Setty left AVRO on 30 June, 1912 and received the Medal before or upon leaving the company. (12/06/12). I believe that he received the experience certificate after designing, rebuilding and testing a plane all by himself. He continued to work afterwards, even though he had already overstayed his allotted time in the UK. I believe he contributed to the AVRO 500, which was first flown in March 1912.
