     Conseguì il brevetto di pilota a Cameri (Novara) nel 1915, e partecipò alla guerra contro l'Austria nella 36a quadriglia da caccia sostenendo molti combattimenti e abbattendo otto apparecchi nemici. Appunto in un combattimento sostenuto arditamente contro 16 velivoli nemici ebbe ragione degli avversari e abbatté l'asso austriaco Cav. Carlo Schuler abbattitore di 17 apparecchi italiani (18 settembre 1918).
     Dopo la guerra fu ai Campi Sperimentali di Torino e di Montecelio finché passò all'Aeronautica d'Italia.
     Per la propaganda aeronautica fondò la P.A.N.
     Collaudò l'apparecchio «Rondine» della Pegna-Bonmartini.
     Con apparecchio AC-3, salendo a metri 11.817 nel gennaio 1928, batté il record mondiale d'altezza prima tenuto dall'americano Champion; con apparecchio Fiat A.S.I. motore Fiat A-50 da 90 HP nel 1930 batté records notevoli dell'aviazione turistica: quello di altezza di m. 6782, di distanza di Km 2700, e di durata con ore 29 di volo.
     Partecipò al Giro Aereo d'Italia del 1930 con Fiat TR 1, motore Fiat A-50 da 95 HP, classificandosi secondo.
     Con apparecchio Caproni biplano appositamente costruito l'11 aprile 1934 all'Aeroporto di Montecelio salendo a m. 14.433 batteva nuovamente il record mondiale di altezza.
     Promosso capitano della Riserva Aeronautica nel maggio 1934.
     Decorato di quattro medaglie d'argento al valore aeronautico, insignito della Croce di Commendatore della Corona d'Italia,
Asso dell'Aviazione Italiana.

Translation courtesy of Giovanni Giorgetti      DONATI RENATO was born in Forlì (Italy) on January 18, 1894.
     He got his pilot's license in Cameri (Novara), and participated in the war against Austria in the 36th fighter squadron. He took part in many battles and shot down eight enemy airplanes. He fought boldly in a battle against 16 enemy airplanes, got the better of his opponents, and shot down the Austrian Cav. Carlo Schuler, who had previously shot down 17 Italian airplanes, (September 18, 1918).
     After the war, he was at the Campi Sperimentali of Tourin and Moncelio. Later he went into the Aeronautica d'Italia. He founded the P.A.N. for aeronautical propaganda. He tested the «Rondine» (Swallow) airplane made by Pegna-Bonmartini.
     On January 1928, he broke the world altitude record in a AC-3 airplane, reaching a height of 11,817 meters. The former holder was an American.
     In 1930, he set some remarkable records for general aviation in a Fiat A-50 powered by a 90 HP Fiat A.S.I. engine. He reached a height of 6,782 meters, a distance of 2,700 Km and a duration of 29 hours.
     He also participated in the Italian Air Circuit, ( Giro Aereo d'Italia ), in a Fiat TR 1 powered by a 95 HP Fiat A-50 engine, and placed second.
     On April 11, 1934, he again set a new world altitude record by going up to 14,433 meters in a Caproni Ca 113 AQ, which had been specially made for the purpose. The record was set at the Moncelio airport.
     He was promoted to Captain in the Aeronautical Reserve on May, 1934.
     He was awarded four silver medals for gallantry and the Croce di Commendatore della Corona d'Italia.
     He was an Ace of Italian Aviation.
