From the Steinway & Sons Archives, the Model B Steinway was completed on August
14, 1918 and sold to Harry S. Harkness on August 23, 1918. The instrument was sold as a plain ebony case. On record
with Steinway & Sons as well is that the piano was sold to Schmieg/Hungate/Kotzian, the 20th century prestigious
premiere furniture makers of that time in New York, USA. ( Steinway & Sons used Schmieg/Hungate/Kotzian up to 1940.
It was quite common in those days for prominent wealthy families to have a furniture maker make all of the furniture
for the family. Most likely Schmieg/Hungate/Kotzian were acting on the behalf of Harry S. Harkness. The piano was then sent from Steinway & Sons to the furniture manufactuers firm. This one of a kind design was then fabricated for this exquisite walnut artcase and matching bench. The piano when completed was delivered to 270 Park Ave, New York USA.) |

The company was founded in 1908 and Schmieg and Kotzian met as apprentices to very
prominent London furniture manufacturers. They decided to become partners and move to New York to establish their
prestigious cabinet making firm. The exquisite modern design and superior quality cabinetry is what they became
very famous for. The instument has important historical significance and if sold at today's market prices would
fetch a very princely sum. Information and Pictures courtesy of : Steinway&Sons MaestrosMusicInternational - MaestrosMusic.com PianosbyNaomi.com DecorativeArts.com Dumont Piano Steinway Restoration |
