Frenchman Charles L. A. Hubert in his Farman biplane, which has "Aerial Mail" painted on the underside of its bottom wing. Hubert crashed this biplane and broke both his legs, at Hendon airfeld, during the Coronation flights, on September 11th, while taking off with eight bags of mail, which are reported to have weighed about 200 pounds.

1911 KING GEORGE V CORONATION
AIR MAIL FLIGHTS
On this website, one of many built by Roy Nagl, you will find a very interesting revue of the "ROYAL MAIL - 1911- KING GEORGE V CORONATION FLIGHTS." Included is a comprehensive summary of the many events of the program, as well as a day by day listing of the flights. The article is illustrated with photographs of Hubert, as well as Gustav Hamel and E. F. Driver. The article includes photographs of two postcards which were carried on the flights.
If time permits, and if you are not already familiar with Roy's other websites, I heartily recommend that you scroll to the bottom of the page and click on as many as catch your interest. He has assembled a wealth of information on many other subjects in the field, a veritable treasurehouse of stories and photographs.

This page offers a very detailed revue of the first airplane crash covers which may have been carried by Hubert. I think you will be impressed as I was with the amount of information which has been collected over the years. You can access the page by clicking on the title above.
