My final conclusion regarding this photograph of Harriet with the "man". 1) Hamel was not in the US. 2) Harriet only sat in this monoplane in the US. Other than these facts there is also the obvious: The only plane for which Hamel was in the company of Harriet Quimby was at Dover and it had a pontoon. In my book,THE HARRIET QUIMBY SCRAPBOOK,, there are lots of photographs of Harriet at Dover, some with Hamel. None match the picture in question. My own best guess is that this is Andre Houpert, Harriet's instructor at the Moisant School of Aviation at Mineola, LI, NY in 1911. Library of Congress Collection, 8-1-08 |
