FIVE CONDITIONS FOR TAKEOFF Walter and Fred debated a long time under exactly what conditions they would take off. They agreed on five essential conditions that would have to be favorable before they'd risk it: 1. A low tide. So we would have a wide beach on which to take off. 2. A smooth beach. Because with certain winds the surface of the beach would have bumps and holes in it that might wreck the ship before we could get it off the ground. 3. A wind up or down the beach. Not a dangerous side wind. 4. A light wind. A strong wind might make rough air and we'd get into trouble with our heavy load. 5. Official weather of 3 days without a storm.
