BIOGRAPHICAL NOTES via email from Dave Lam, 10-26-06 Rene Caudron (French license # 180-)-- Born 1 July 1884 in Favieres, France. Died 28 September 1959 in Vron, France With his brother Gaston (French License 484) ( 18 January 1882 to 12 December 1915), he constructed their first biplane at their family farm in 1908. It first flew, as a glider, in spring of 1909, towed by their farm mare. Continuing to develop their aircraft, they built a factory at Rue, and then started a pilot training school at Crotoy. They built their first G-3 and G-4 airplanes for the French military at Rue, and then later moved the factory to Lyon, and finally to a factory at Issy-les Moulineux in 1915. During a test flight at Lyon, Gaston was killed in 1915. The continued production of the Caudron factory produced innumerable aircraft for the French military, especially the G-3, G-4, R4, and R-11 Models. Up to the time of World War 2, they had trained over 17,000 pilots and produced more than 10,000 aircraft. Hope that helps. Dave |
