Contributed by Shmuel Shai, 6-26-10 I will describe the event and how I was involved - We demolished an old factory to make room for our new Cotroceni mall. We found a marble plaque on the wall which said that from here, on June 17th 1910, Aurel Vlaicu flew a motorized airplane made in Romania for the first time. This plate had been kept by the museum of the Romanian air force hero's. I started to look to see who Aurel Vlaicu was, (I am a foreigner who never heard of him), and when I saw on the Internet who he was, I understood that he was a genius. I received the original marble plaque, which was in very bad condition, and had it renovated by my engineering team. I had a new black marble plaque produced for the event which mentioned that on June 17th 2010, an event was held to honor Aurel Vlaicu who had flown from the Cotroceni air field in a Romanian-made, motorized airplane. I had both of the marble plaques mounted on the wall at the main entrance to the mall and will be there forever. A retired general from the Romanian air force contacted me to support and sponsor the event they are planning long time to be in June 17th 2010,100 years of this historic flight. As you saw in the photos a lot of soldiers solute him,the priests prayed for his soul and Romanian air force air planes flew. It was emotional moment for me, a foreigner, to support a Romanian hero.
